Moon Magnet founder Reed Fox recently sat down with The Denver Business Beat Podcast to talk about turning a love of music into a business, building Moon Magnet in Denver, and what it actually looks like to make a living doing creative work.

Moon Magnet started in 2013, but it definitely didn’t begin as a traditional company. It came from Denver’s music community, artists collaborating, recording, performing, throwing events, teaching, and figuring everything out as they went.

More than a decade later, that same idea is still at the center of what we do.

Turning Music Into a Business

One of the big themes of the conversation is something Reed has spent much of his career figuring out: how do you build a sustainable life around music without losing the creative part of it?

What began as a smaller artist collective eventually grew into three different sides of Moon Magnet which are our music school, DJ company, and recording, mixing, and mastering company.

This didn’t all happen in a cookie cutter way of course. A lot of it came from following opportunities, learning new skills, working with other musicians, and finding all the ways for different parts of music to work together.

For Reed, being a musician and being a business owner have never really been two separate things.

Building Moon Magnet in Denver

Denver has been a huge part of the Moon Magnet story from the beginning.

The company grew with the people around it whether it be musicians, students, teachers, collaborators, venues, clients, friends, and other like minded people.

Over the years that has encompassed everything from music lessons and studio sessions to weddings, DJ sets, independent releases, performances, and local events.

Our community first approach is still a big part of Moon Magnet today.

Creativity and Entrepreneurship Aren’t Opposites

Running a creative business means learning a lot of things that don't necessarily feel very artistic at first, but the business side can also make more creativity possible.

Finding the right balance has allowed Moon Magnet to keep supporting artists, teachers, students, DJs, engineers, and performers while continuing to make weird things of our own.

This is a big part of Reed’s story and a big part of what Moon Magnet has become.

More Than a Decade of Moon Magnet

Moon Magnet has seen a lot since 2013.

What started as a small creative collective has grown into a Denver music company working across music education, DJ entertainment, recording, mixing, mastering, performance, and even independent music.

The shape of it has changed, but the foundation hasn’t.

Music gives people a way to connect and express themselves, and all we want is to build more opportunities for that to happen in any way we can.
